Being blacklisted by Spamhaus or Barracuda means your emails are being blocked at the server level. To get delisted, you must immediately stop sending, identify the root cause (usually spam traps or compromised accounts), clean your list, secure your DNS, and then formally request removal.
Seeing your domain or IP on a blacklist is one of the most stressful situations in email marketing. When you are listed on Spamhaus, Barracuda, or SORBS, your emails are not just going to the spam folder — they are being completely rejected by the receiving servers.
Panicking and asking the blacklist provider to remove you won't work. Blacklists are automated systems that flag systemic infrastructure failures. To get delisted, you must prove you have fixed the problem.
Why You Got Blacklisted
Blacklists do not appear out of nowhere. You were listed because your sending behaviour matched the profile of a spammer. The three most common causes:
- Spam Traps: Sending to recycled or honeypot addresses. Usually from purchased lists or failure to remove inactive subscribers.
- High Complaint Rates: Too many recipients clicked "Report Spam", pushing your complaint rate above 0.3%.
- Compromised Accounts: Weak passwords or exploited forms allowed hackers to send spam through your infrastructure.
The 4-Step Delisting Process
Step 1: Stop All Sending Immediately
The moment you discover a blacklist, pause all campaigns and automated workflows. Every email you send while blacklisted further damages your reputation.
Step 2: Identify and Isolate the Source
Check your ESP's bounce logs for SMTP error codes (usually 550 5.7.1). Identify which IP or domain is flagged. Change passwords, audit permissions, and secure SMTP relays.
Step 3: Aggressive List Hygiene
Remove all hard bounces, suppress anyone who hasn't engaged in 6 months, and implement double opt-in. Never send to purchased lists.
Step 4: Submit the Delisting Request
Once secured, go to Spamhaus Blocklist Removal Center or Barracuda Central. Be honest in your request — explain what caused the issue and what you fixed.
